Wow! The news from Allegiant keeps getting better this week! Monday we shared news about their new nonstop service between Greensboro, N.C., (GSO) and the Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) and yesterday we were happy to learn about new service between Grand Rapids, Mich. (GRR) and Charlotte County. Today we are over the MOON with news of yet another city now connected to Southwest Florida with nonstop flights, Lexington, K.Y. (LEX)!

We extend a hearty welcome to those attending the 2010 Florida Main Street Annual Conference and Awards Dinner, Sept. 15 – 17 in downtown Punta Gorda. We are honored Florida Main Street is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands.
The two-day conference includes educational sessions presented by professionals from throughout Florida and the nation on topics ranging from economic development to tourism. The Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center will serve as the hub of activity with off-site events and tours planned throughout the City.
Florida’s Secretary of State, Dawn K. Roberts, will be a featured speaker along with Mary Means, nationally known for her role in creating the National Main Street Program at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Main Street Punta Gorda has taken the lead in coordinating the conference and Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau staff has worked on the committee hosting the conference. Punta Gorda was selected as a Main Street Community in 2007.

We were elated to read results of the 2010 America’s Favorite Farmers Market contest coordinated by American Farmland Trust because the Downtown Punta Gorda Farmers Market was voted as the favorite market in Florida! It was also voted in the top 20 for small farmers markets in the United States. Very cool!
The Downtown Punta Gorda Farmers Market is held each Saturday 8 a.m. to noon (’til 1 p.m. Oct. – May), rain or shine on Taylor Street in front of the Old Historic Courthouse and into the Hector House Park and parking lot. Offers a full array of foods with some art-related vendors. Produce is varied including organic, some from small local farms and regular produce. Other food includes fresh pasta, seafood, meats, cheeses, baked goods, soups to go, citrus, jams and jellies, dried fruits and nuts, fresh cut flowers, plants and entertainment. The market allows folks to buy fresher and cheaper.
